Meanwhile, tirzepatide’s typical side effects are similar, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pains, upset stomach, indigestion, reactions at the injection site, fatigue, belching, gas, hair loss, and heartburn.

While these side effects often resolve within a few weeks, there are more serious, though rarer, side effects to be mindful of. For example, the FDA has issued a BOXED WARNING about the potential association of GLP-1 medications like semaglutide with a type of thyroid cancer known as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). This concern primarily stems from laboratory studies on rodents, and its risk to humans is not definitively known. Semaglutide is not recommended for individuals with a family history of MTC or those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Other severe side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, low blood sugar, kidney disease, severe allergic reactions, vision issues such as diabetic retinopathy, rapid heartbeat, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
